There is one thing that the Internet has done for us marketers... It's cleaned out people's mailboxes. Bigger companies are constantly trying to cut costs where they can, and marketing budgets are usually the first things to get slashed. That being said, there is a new training product that just came out, called Offline Arbitrage, that promises to deliver the precise direct mail method. First, I'd like to talk through some of the high points of direct mail.

The single most important aspect of direct mail marketing is response rate. On average, you can expect about 2.6% response from your direct mail campaigns. That means that about 3 people out of 100 are going to respond to your letter or your postcard. Now, that might seem pretty dismal, but there are tricks to get the response rate a little higher.

A great strategy for determining how successful your campaign will be is to take the industry average, 2.6%, and multiple that by the price of the product that you will be promoting. As that number approaches how much it'll cost to mail, you'll be able to figure out if direct mail will be profitable for you. What that's called is the 'break even' point. Or the point that you make as much as you spend for the mailing. Don't worry about the numbers yet though, as all of this stuff is available inside Offline Arbitrage.

The best place I've found to learn more about direct mail and mailing techniques is Offline Arbitrage. Offline Arbitrage is a course put out by Ryan Deiss, where he talks about some of the strategies that his team and his partners use to generate leads online, all through direct mail. The best part is when he generates these leads, he's go the break even points nailed down so he's actually able to generate marketing lists for free!

Direct mail can be an incredibly powerful marketing medium if it's used correctly. Don't use complicated graphics or plaster your logo all over the place... It will only reduce the response you get from the direct mail piece. Instead, use white paper or white card stock, black letters and red headlines. Make bold claims in big letters. Also, remember to send all the traffic to your squeeze page or to a 800 number so you can capitalize on your marketing costs. All of this stuff an more is available in Offline Arbitrage.
