Getting relevant traffic to a website is increasingly becoming difficult because of the growing competition, which is obvious. Of course, that also means that you have many more methods available to you for marketing and getting people to notice you. It's not a new phenomenon but thanks to how powerful it has become, Google AdWords is still the dominant force in the market. So how hard do you have to work if you want Google AdWords to send traffic to your site or business? What matters most is your approach; if you're okay with overcoming the learning curve and aren't afraid to put in some honest effort, you should be able to do just fine. But if you dread taking small risks and don't like the idea of 'investing' your hard-earned money, then it will definitely be hard for you. If you are new to this type of thing and want to make sure that your initial AdWords campaigns actually pay off, keep reading.

The types of keywords you select will play a vital role in the success or failure of your AdWords campaign. Just because broad keywords look like they can generate a lot of traffic for your site, don't make the mistake of falling for it.

Why is that? Simply because your conversion level will suffer when you use broad keywords. You will pay a lot for each click and your return won't be good at all, even if you do get a lot of traffic. A wiser approach is to choose more specific keywords that can help you generate clicks that lead to conversions. Every click your campaign generates is important because it costs you money. Thus, make sure you are only using targeted and relevant keywords. The golden rule: only pick keywords that you can afford.

While you are contemplating which keywords to use in your ad, also remember that it needs to contain copy that your prospects find interesting and compelling.

You should write the copy keeping in mind what your prospects are actually looking for, and answer their 'what's in it for me' questions by including the benefits in the copy. If you don't have great ad copy, then your keywords will be of no use.

Google lets you include a display URL in your ad, which is not the same as the destination address. To increase the relevancy of your ad, you need to use your main keyword in this URL. Say that the destination URL is www.howto.com and you are targeting "roses" as a keyword, then your display URL should look something like www.howto.com/roses. Don't ignore this step and view it as something unimportant because it will make a difference to your overall click through rate.

It makes no difference, but just because you've already failed with AdWords, doesn't mean you shouldn't try again, especially since the advice in this article is meant to help you with your next campaign. Once you start seeing a trickle of profit coming in, it will give you the motivation ramp up your campaign and take it to the next level. Remember, AdWords is just one of the many tools that you'll be using to enhance your online business, so it's not a business in itself. So if in the starting it doesn't give you results, don't worry, it will do eventually.
